Mountain House
Farsight Wines
Cordoba Rd. Stellenbosch
New residential structure on19 hectare portion of land located on the upper slopes of the Heilderberg Mountain, in the Stellenbosch Winelands. The farm which is mainly covered by alien vegetation and a few patches of fynbos is at present uncultivated primarily because of the extreme gradient of the land and exposure to the seasonal winds. The position enjoys spectacular (270 degree) views of the broader Cape Town city area, as well as surrounding mountains and vineyards. The clients brief is to design a 4 bedroomed luxury house, approximately 900 square metres in size, must be modern in its architectural expression, maximise the views of the surroundings while creating external areas protected from the seasonal winds and have a sensitive relationship to the surrounding landscape. The views of the house from the surrounds was a key element of the design process since the visual impact had to be minimised.
The terraced courtyard house was designed following the existing mountain terrain contour lines.
An internal courtyard with water features was designed to create an external green lounge protected by the seasonal winds.
